KNOW MORE ABOUT WATER
- The volume of fresh water on the earth’s surface is fixed. It can be neither increased not decreased.
- Ground water represents the only source of drinking water for about a quarters of the world’s population. But in many places water is being withdrawn faster than it is being replaced.
- Food production is a thirsty business. It takes more than 1900 liters of water to grow just one kilogram of rice – the staple food in may parts of India.
- The best way of resolving the problem of the water shortage is to grow more food using less water – getting “More crop per drop”.
WATER FOR FOOD
- One must know that, nearly 70% of all fresh water withdrawals are used for agriculture, yet millions of people remain malnourished.
- IRRIGATION is essential to feeding the world. Only 17% of the world’s crop land is irrigated, but it produces more than one third of the world’s food.
OBJECTIVITY OF FUTURE USE OF WATER
a)a) Find appropriate answers for drought prone areas And arid zones.
b) Improve and maintain water quality, control pollution and protect water sources.
c) Ensure equity between groups, between generations and between species.
- It is estimates that micro irrigation systems ( Drip and Sprinkler ) save 48% to 67% in terms of water, 44% to 67% of energy and 29% to 60% in terms of labour.
- Women are the main drawers of water, especially drinking water. Sustainable water management is not possible unless gender aspects are integrated.
